Yeah. Maybe I’m back writing about Doctor Who.

Mainly, because this 2024 restart will *smiles widely* offend so many, many people.

I can’t wait.

And, in fact, I haven’t. I’m just pausing for lunch.

What’s offended me:

Disney claiming Doctor Who is their original program. Lol. They should have looked it up in a library.

The first ep ickness.

That’s it for me. But I no doubt there will be angry letters in the press soon enough.

Things I noticed:

A word. A significant word that I’m not sure has been said much or at all on this program was uttered out loud. I won’t give it away but it’s not the word you think it is. I believe it’s central. If it is, then it needs to be addressed, not just put out there.

RTD doing what he does: heart. Girl and the Doctor. There’s a home, there’s mundane British stuff, with family related call back jokes. RTD is sentimental, but that’s what grounds his stories in a kind of reality.

However, this series has not ignored the Moffatt era where every damn thing overtly plays into notions of story / writing / fairy tale. Connection is key, so that has already featured. Thus, there’s a grounded reality, overlaid with the air of fairy tale and larger than life characters..

On top of these elements, the Chibnall era’s big idea is continued. Personally, I don’t mind it. There’s a nice congruence between Ruby and The Doctor which was obviously a deliberate writing decision, that could become a deliberate reason of itself, a set up, if you will, like The Doctor meeting Clara (Master / Missy as author). In any event, how this plot device plays out will be crucial.

What’s changed?

Many previously over wrought issues that took longer to address or reveal to companions were basically explained and sorted, or “parked” to go back to, up front. Ok. Faster pace, quicker info dumps, move along (at speed) not-Pond.

Conclusion:

It’s the same. It’s different. It’s brighter. It’s serious. It’s ridiculous. It’s charismatic. There’s mysteries, there’s adventures. There’s a bigger budget, or a better deployed one. I haven’t noticed a Welsh quarry yet, but honestly, Who knows?
